The ever-clever folk at NOWNESS.com examine the recent influence of tattoos in fashion while taking a peek at the latest clothing and
accessories line

Creating The Look: Benini & Fashion Photography

Monday, July 12th, 2010

There’s a new, not to be missed, exhibition that’s about to be launched at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum. It’s titled, you guessed it: Creating the look: Benini and fashion photography. And it kicks off on 31 July, 2010. This yummy new exhibition – that is part of Sydney Design 10 – explores the art of fashion photography. Creating the look: Benini and fashion photography explores the creative processes involved in styling, crafting and designing powerful eye-catching fashion photographs. More specifically it draws on the highly successful partnership between Italian-born photographer Bruno Benini and his wife Hazel Benini, a New Zealand-born window display artist, fashion stylist and visual merchandising designer. From the 1950s through to 2000, the couple produced some of Australia’s most memorable and elegant fashion images by combining careful styling with elegant design.

The Bold & The Beautiful

The Bold: Miss Moss Opera beaded cuff

Sometimes in life, you have to shake things up a bit. I’ve just spent the past few days revamping my online store. One of the things I did was re-categorise my collections which are now referred to as The Bold & The Beautiful. This has simplified matters no end. Instead of “neo-classic” this and “rockin’ retro” that, I now have two collections which are defined by the following: (more…)

Grey is the New Black

Sass and Bide Chaplin Tee

I have just discovered grey and it is my new black. I always thought that grey would drain the skin: i.e make the wearer look wan, sunken-eyed, depleted…you get the drift..But, alas! Grey does not do these things. Instead it’s easy to wear (like black) but it’s softer, somewhat moodier and it has more depth than black, that is just so….well, black.  Grey is great to layer (i.e with white and/or other greyish tones); it’s also good with a splash of colour (I favour coral); and wonderful with silver jewellery.  I thought this Sass and Bide t-shirt was cute. It’s available for sale via their website.

Dressing and Dreaming: Exhibition Review

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

I’ve been hunting about in my archives for articles to add to my new website siobhanobrien.com.au    I found this piece that was published in the Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Living section some time back. It’s an exhibition review of Dressing and Dreaming, which was held at Sydney’s Sherman Gallery. I thought I’d post it on the Miss Moss blog as well. Here it is: Dressing and Dreaming: Copyright (c) Siobhan O’Brien

Akira Isogawa

Fashion is no longer just about ornamentation and warmth, it has evolved into an art, beyond racks, runways, streets, even our bodies. Our first whiff of this, was when demonstrators and feminists in the sixties recognized t-shirts as the perfect vehicle for artistic, political and social comment. But, now clothing has gone beyond the need of even having to contain a body, or at least that’s what the ten artists think in the “Dressing and Dreaming” exhibition at the Sherman Galleries. (more…)

Ostwald Helgason Fashion Funks it up!

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

Who needs to visit an art gallery? Print in fashion is not new, but with technological advancements, innovation and a dash of flair a surge of photosynthesis prints provide an almost 3D effect to finished garments. This funky fusion of colour, print and real-life-drama makes the wearer look like a sculptural installation that moves. One brand which applies this with aplomb is Ostwald Helgason – a forward-thinking fashion duo which includes Susanne Ostwald and Ingvar Helgason. The German and Icelandic designers met in London, won a couple of design grants from the German government and showed their first joint collection at Paris Fashion Week shortly thereafter. Ostwald Helgason launched in 2006 and stocks far flung countries around the globe – such as Denmark, Iceland and Hong Kong. What about Australia guys?

Rough Cut Diamond Ring

This Charming Man’s Edward Janssen has had many lives: he was born in England, raised in Australia and now resides in New York where he makes extraordinary things. One of his latest creations is a collaborative effort with Sruli Recht, which is this AMAZING Rough Cut Diamond Ring, which features a ten carat white gold möbius band with a hand tapped 16 gauge internal thread which allows the wearer to interchange the stone – black, yellow or white – depending on mood/outfit/whim. It is so unexpectedly beautiful, unique and mysterious, even a little haunting.
